Oakland Technical High School inside the Auditorium. The 10th annual free concert highlighted the performances of nine jazz ensembles within the district. This year’s concert was dedicated to the legendary jazz trumpeter, educator, and Oakland Tech parent, Khalil Shaheed, who has dedicated his life to nurturing the talents of numerous youth through his Oaktown Jazz Workshops organization. The concert, which featured longtime Oakland resident and world renowned percussionist Pete Escovedo,was made possible by event sponsorship from 51Oakland. Mr. Escovedo was joined by his son Juan Escovedo and Tony Flores, both of whom worked with the OUSD student performers during a two hour rehearsal prior to the evening’s headline performance. Pete Escovedo was also honored at the event. After being presented with a proclamation by the City of Oakland’s Mayor’s Office, he then joined his son Juan and Flores on stage with 150 student musicians for the show’s finale.The Oakland Unified School District Jazz Festival took place February 9th, 2012 at
